Cinema in 2015: A Year of Women

Film Review-Mad Max: Fury Road

As far back as July I said it. 2015 has been the year of women in cinema. That isn’t some condescending hagiography or social justice hashtag. It’s true.

There’s Furiosa and other Amazon-ish warriors rebelling against their patriarchal overlord in “Mad Max,” or Amy Schumer showing how it’s done at thirty and single in “Trainwreck.”

“Room” depicts a most complicated portrait of motherhood, while “Inside Out” paints a very psychological portrait of female childhood. “Joy” celebrates feminine wiles in the workplace circa 1989, and “Suffragette” condemns feminine oppression in the workplace circa 1912.

We see the Mexican drug war (“Sicario”) and the life of a transgender pioneer (“The Danish Girl”) through the eyes of women, and in “Carol” we’re privy to an exquisite romance that knows no masculinity.

“Brooklyn” and “It Follows” portray teenage displacement, both historical and contemporary, and in a galaxy far, far away Daisy Ridley saves it from yet another Death Star. Heroines dominate current dystopia, both modern (Tomorrowland) and futuristic (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay), and in “Steve Jobs” an equally brilliant daughter saves the Apple titan from himself.

‘Nuff said. Here’s the rest of it:
